32 Bruce Whittington, first full time engineer at Co-op Radio, came across a radio system that bypassed radio waves entirely while working in a Mozambique village in the early 80's. It consisted of two audio cassette recorders, two tapes, a microphone and a loudspeaker in a tree. People would record their announcements, tell their news and sing songs into one tape recorder while the other played back through the loudspeaker in a tree. As soon as a tape was filled up it would be exchanged with the other. PR
