how these methods connect to Haus
Wittgenstein
It seems that there exists a hidden formal algorithm that influenced the design
of the building.
6 volumes, positive and negative, are arranged around a central main volume,
this arrangement suggest the existence of an imaginary axis. the house, viewed
from any side shows a fragile visual equilibrium. many different properties
influence this equilibrium; the volume of the cubes, their centroids, the surfaces,
the proportions, the density and the array of the openings... this relatively
simple looking but complex composition doesn't allow reverse-engineering of
the underlying algorithm. various examinations on this by different persons
led to diverse results. what is evident is the closed-circuit layout of connections
inside the design. all the parts, from lightbulbs to doors, windows to space-cubature
are in a formal relation to each other. the design is strictly self-referential.
like it were designed for floating in space, no part of the building is in context
with the surrounding, the site, the points of a compass.
how can one add extensions to such
a building ? since the design works as a closed circuit, every attempt to insert
something would break the whole system. the system itself remains inaccessible,
the underlying codes and algorithms are not cognizable.
my approach is to use the existing geometry as an origin instead of trying to
reconstruct the rules that lead to its appearance. self-similarity is the key
here. by repeating the original geometry and deforming it by its own apparent
transformations, new forms can be generated with any degree of complexity, shape
and proportions. these resulting forms still maintain all the relations and
references of the original design.
